Guest Column: Notes from the Legislature’s veto session
As members of our community have noted recently, the veto and override process is an important part of the checks and balances system within our democracy. We voted to override Gov. Phil Scott’s vetoes because the work in the bills is important for Vermont. Below is the list of veto overrides we supported and a brief explanation.

H.887 — Yield Bill

The yield bill sets the property and income yield numbers, key figures that school boards and towns use to set education property tax rates. While tax rate increases will vary by district, the average statewide increase, once projected to be over 20 percent has now dropped to 13.8 percent. We were able to bring the increase down by adding new revenue sources (cloud software tax, short term rental property tax) and applying modest one-time funds.

Rep. Angela Arsenault: Phil Scott and Jason Gibbs, turn away from aggressive rhetoric and fearmongering
Dear Gov. Phil Scott and Chief of Staff Jason Gibbs,

I have served in the Vermont House of Representatives for two years now and as I close out my first term, I’m struck by how often I feel angry or sad or attacked. When I think about why that is, I realize it has a lot to do with you.

The general tone in the Legislature is one of mutual respect and civility. I wish I could say the same for the general tone coming out of your office. Your communications have steadily become more and more aggressive. They have simultaneously become less accurate and more political.

Candidates line up for Statehouse seat nominations
The Democratic Primary Election in August for nominations to represent Williston in the Vermont Senate will be contested with four candidates vying for three seats. Also, Williston’s Bruce Roy will run uncontested for a Republican nomination, setting up a contest between him and three Democrats in the General Election in November.

Williston is part of the Chittenden Southeast Senate District along with several neighboring municipalities. Incumbents Thomas Chittenden of South Burlington, Ginny Lyons of Williston and Kesha Ram Hinsdale of Shelburne are all running for re-election. Challenging them for a Democratic nomination is Louis Meyers of South Burlington.
